Lilo & Stitch is Pure Childhood Nostalgia

I cannot believe how many negative reviews there are about 2025's live action remake of Lilo & Stitch. The Guardian describes Lilo & Stitch as an "unnecessary remake" and a "monstrosity." The Vulture is not much kinder stating the "remake wasn't such a great idea" and Time Magazine believes "Disney Did Stitch Dirty." The critics seem upset at Disney for making a live-action adaptation of the 2002 Lilo & Stitch. According to critics, the movie is devoid of the charm and magic of the original.

I disagree with the critics! I watched Lilo & Stitch opening weekend and loved it! The movie is a joyous experience of childhood nostalgia.

The live action remake stays pretty true to the original story. The scary monstrous creation known as Experiment 626 aka Stitch escapes the clutches of the United Galactic Federation and crash lands on earth, specifically in Hawaii. A rambunctious little 6 year old Lilo stumbles upon the blue furred creature and mistakes it for a dog resulting in her adopting Stitch. Chaos and destruction ensues as these two manage to create heaps of trouble.

I am always weary about CGI characters in life action, so I was relieved to see that Disney captured Stitch perfectly. The blue furred alien's mannerisms, features and expressions are all exceptionally done. Stitch is so darn cute in the movie that I literally wished I could squeeze him in my arms. My favourite part is when he realizes that he is on a tiny island surrounded by water because Stitch's mass exponentially increases in water, so he would drown if he ever fell in the ocean.

A fun piece of lore is that Stitch was created in 1985 by Chris Sanders who went on to voice Stitch in the 2002 animated original and reprised his role for the live-action too! Did you also know, the 2002 Lilo & Stitch was one of Disney's last projects to feature hand painted watercolour backgrounds. It was also ground breaking in mixing old-fashioned ultra-expressive hand-drawn animation with watercolour backgrounds and computer animation in the sci-fi scenes.

Newcomer Maia Kealoha does a fantastic job at capturing the mischievious free-spirited personality that makes Lilo so beloved. Despite being new to the big screen, this young actress captured everyone's heart in the movie theatre. She is just so darn cute and did a great job at portraying the sad moments in the movie. Stitch is a CGI character that was added in during post production, so it takes some serious talent at such a young age to perform in front of the camera without a Stitch physically there! I know I could never do that, in fact, I am terrible at acting hence why I have never ventured into the world of Youtube.

I do not care what the critics have to say about movies because critics only seem to like deep complex artsy movies. I go to the movies to escape reality and immerse myself into a fictitious world. I always say, if you are looking for flaws, you are going to find them! Lilo & Stitch is a great movie and is definitely worth the watch. The movie has a great message - Ohana - and for Lilo & Stitch it is chosen family.
