Shapes of Light Bocci Installation

Bocci is a Vancouver-based brand that creates lighting fixtures that are both functional and sculptural. Each piece starts at their Vancouver design studio in Railtown where Bocci's team of skilled glassblowers handcraft every fixture in their onsite hot shop.

Bocci continues to push the boundaries of what lighting can be and this time they do so with the Shapes of Light installation. Accessible only through an unassuming door inside Pallet Coffee Roasters HQ, Bocci has created a floor to ceiling sculpture composed of 121 pendants from their 28 series. Suspended together on copper pipes, each hand bent to create a luminous silhouette of a tree that quietly commands the room. The piece extended from the ceiling down to the floor. The studio space had high ceilings and the Bocci team designed the piece to be literally floor to ceiling. Some of the pendants were carefully positioned to rest against the floor.

A colour palette of deep greens, soft olive tones, clear and snowy white come together harmoniously - a subtle and elegant nod to the holiday season. Each pendant is unique as it is created by hand, so no two will ever be alike. The green glass and copper piping complimented each other really well. I also loved the decision to not add any "ornaments" or "star" to the sculpture. The monotone green and white was beautiful on its own and created a stronger silhouette.

Alongside one of the walls was also a massive wreath in which a single bocci light was nestled within it. Also on display were several of their lighting pieces available for purchase. But it was the tree that was the centrepiece.

I hope Bocci will continue to create unique glass sculptural installations for public viewing. The time also informed me that I can get a tour of the hot shop, so I am definitely going to be taking them up on that offer.
