Edgy, Quirky and Offbeat: Why I am Obsessed with The Umbrella Academy a Netflix Original

I am obsessed with The Umbrella Academy and the anticipation for season 2 to drop is killing me. Thankfully we are only a couple hours out because this Netflix Original is back July 31, 2020. At first glance, the Umbrella Academy seems like another comic book superhero adaptation, but The Umbrella Academy could not be further from it. When I first came across this show, I grossly underestimated it and for that, I apologize to all the fans.

The Umbrella Academy is complex, intelligent, dramatic; yet quirky, edgy, upbeat and completely unique. If I had to sum up the storyline, it would be: 7 gifted children that are adopted by an eccentric billionaire who trains them to become a "child superhero league," but they eventually drift apart, only to reunite under the same roof at their father's funeral which is also they find out they are humanity's only hope of stopping the apocalypse.

I know I know, superheroes and apocalypse, but I assure you this is nothing like the Marvel or DC shows. The Umbrella Academy is completely different and marches to the beat of its own drum - I really wanted to use this saying, but it is true!

This is the point where I stop being vague and insert my official disclaimer that there are SPOILERS ahead.
Sir Reginald Hargreeves

I have a couple of wild theories about the Hargreeve children and some of them may be a bit far fetched, but that is what makes it fun. I am convinced the billionaire aka Sir Reginald Hargreeves is not from planet earth. Season 1 Episode 10, Reginald's dying wife tells him it is time to go and in the background spacecraft are seen taking flight. He has a dapper English-speaking chimpanzee named Pogo for a butler, the children's mother is a sophisticated robot that cannot be discerned from human-beings, so my conclusion, Mr. Hargreeve's is an alien.

Number Four: Klaus

Klaus is my favourite character, no arguments there. He wears eye-liner, he is misunderstood, he is emotional, real, and despite being an addict, he is oddly relatable. Also, can we take a moment to talk about the wicked pair of black jeans that lace up along the sides because they are wicked. I also have another theory, a handler took out Dave, his lover from the war because that was the only way to get Klaus to return back to the present time aka course correct.

 Number One: Luther

I cannot stand Luther because his character is downright irksome. He does seem like a nice individual who just wants everyone to be safe and happy, but he believes it is his sole responsibility. Luther is so frustrating to watch because he is an arrogant self-righteous person who sees himself as superior to the rest of his siblings. Do you know how infuriating it was to watch him lock Vanya up despite everyone being completely against it? Or the time he completely undermines Allison and charges in before she even had the chance to connect with Vanya. We get it Luther, you are Number One, the so-called "leader" but you suck.

The Soundtrack

Season 1 soundtrack is genius and fingers crossed Season 2 is no different. Steve Blackman is the man behind the music selection. The songs enhance the show's narrative and truthfully really gives the show life. Peppered throughout the show are songs from Rock'n'Rolls best and I will be honest, music from the 60's and 70's was way more epic compared. The hip-hop top 40 that defines my generation is embarrassing, downright garbage. To name a few, the shootout at the bowling alley in episode 10 plays out to Bay City Rollers - Saturday Night (1975). Or how can I forget the shootout at Griddy's Doughnuts as They Might Be Giants - Istanbul (1990) blasts through the speakers. When I get a chance, I am going to put together a playlist of my favourite songs from the show because it has really helped diversify my iPod playlist.

I cannot wait to dive into Season 2. I am ready to have my questions answered like how did Ben die or is Luther still a gorilla man or are they still stuck in a weird time loop?! Also, does the world regenerate after the apocalypse and how far in the future can the time department really travel? Plus does The Handler boss die or is she still around? Who else is ready for season 2 of The Umbrella Academy? Let me know in the comments below
