The Frenchsicle - French's Ketchup-Flavoured Popsicle

The first thing that comes to mind when I think of French is mustard. Not ketchup and definitely not ketchup-flavoured popsicles, but that is precisely what happened mid-morning in downtown Vancouver on June 22, 2022!

Just outside the Holt Renfrew was a cute little ice cream cart in French's iconic mustard yellow colour. Ketchup-flavoured popsicles aka the Frenchsicle were passed out to those who were brave enough to give it a try. Ketchup is a universally beloved condiment, but reimagining it as a frozen treat is a bold move on French's part!

What does a Ketchup Popsicle taste like?
French's stayed true to the tomato dipping sauce by keeping the popsicle 100% savoury. The primary flavour was tomato followed by seasoning. I would say a Caesar cocktails is a perfect description because the ingredients also included rim salt. Though Caesars are delicious, my mind struggled to wrap its mind around the popsicle being savoury ketchup and not a sweet flavour. I only managed a couple of licks before needing to stop.

I have to say, this is a genius marketing move on French's part as the company has been looking to snatch some of the ketchup market shares from Heinz. I did not even know French's made ketchup until the popsicles, so the campaign is a success!

However, I will always remain partial to Heinz in the narrow necked glass bottles. Something about the ketchup from the retro green glass bottles just hits different.
